Senior Technical Writer
John Artim has been in commercial user interface practice for thirteen years.
John began his commercial practice with six years experience at IBM where he began work
in a human factors lab designing and assessing user interface for individual products.
He then worked in an IBM architecture group coordinating design and construction of the
user interface for a family of application development tools using the then relatively
new techniques of object-oriented analysis and design. John also worked on a product
development team and, at an IBM subsidiary, in an object-technology center of competence
as an object-technology consultant.
John next spent six years working at OOCL, a container shipping company, on an enterprise
system for coordinating operational data concerning customers, their shipments,
bills-of-lading, and the financial transactions these customer events produced. John's
responsibilities included working with end-users and their managers to establish and verify
requirements, user interface design, client-side development in Smalltalk, and user interface
architecture and assessment. He also did some Java development work on a decision support
application.
John then spent a year working at two start-up companies. He worked at Savi Technologies,
a producer of RF ID related hardware and software. At Savi, John worked in the field to
interview end-users to collect requirements for a logistics-related application for the
Department of Defense. At the same time, he worked with company executives and engineering
and marketing staff to document Savi's existing business and engineering processes in order
to create a new approach to melding business analysis with marketing and engineering
activities in order to better serve customers. John then worked at Zoho, a start-up company
that provided distributed purchasing services to large hotel and restaurant chains.
For the past year John has worked at Expert Support and
has been involved in API documentation and usability assessment. John is currently working on a
user interface design pattern catalog.
John received a B.A. degree in Psychobiology and an M.A. degree in Experimental Psychology
from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
