Both the opening and closing volumes are counted in the current quarter.
Positions opened in a previous quarter and closed in the current quarter:
Only the closing volume is counted in the current quarter. For example, if $2 mil NV of Gold positions were opened in a prior quarter and $1.5 mil NV of Gold was closed in the current quarter, only the $1.5 mil NV closing volume will contribute to the current quarter's total.
Positions opened in the current quarter and closed in a future quarter:
Only the opening volume is counted in the current quarter. For example, if $2 mil NV of EURUSD positions were opened in the current quarter and later closed for $1.5 mil NV in the next quarter, the $2 mil NV opening volume will contribute to the current quarter's total, while the $1.5 mil NV closing volume will be counted in the next quarter.
