MARGIN AND LEVERAGE

Leverage is necessary for a retail trader to open orders for amounts significantly exceeding their initial deposits. With XS, it is up to you to decide what leverage to use to trade with and to make sizeable trades with small deposits.

About Margin

Margin is the amount of collateral required to cover any credit risks arising during your trading operations. Given the high volatile trading conditions, additional equity is required to be always maintained in your trading account to protect you from a potential margin call. Otherwise, your current positions may be closed if the market moves against you and you will not be able to open any new trades. Margin is expressed as the percentage of position size (e.g. 5% or 10%).

For Forex, Gold and Silver, new positions can be opened if the margin requirement for the new positions is equal or less than the free margin of the account. When hedging, positions can be opened even when the margin level is below 100% because the margin requirement for hedged positions is zero.

About Leverage

Using leverage means that you can trade positions larger than the amount of money in your trading account. Leverage amount is expressed as a ratio, for instance 1:1, 1:200, or 1:500.

Leverage is like a credit facility. XS will lend you whenever you trade on margin. This enables you to purchase a larger amount of an asset that exceeds your account value. Without this allowance, you would only be able to open orders of your account value at a time.

Risk management

When using leverage, it is very important to never forget about risk management.

On the one hand, by using leverage, from a relatively small initial investment you can make larger profits on your successful trades. On the other hand, your losses can be significant if you fail to apply proper risk management. Therefore, XS provides a leverage range that helps you choose your preferred risk level as well as a free negative balance protection to keep your account safe. Good traders use stop orders to help them minimize the trading risks.

Trading Sessions

The most productive and liquid trading hours are between the opening of the London markets at 08:00 GMT and the closing of the US markets at 22:00 GMT. The peak time for trading is when the US and London markets overlap between 1 pm GMT – 4 pm GMT. This is usually the time when day traders make most of their trades.

There are generally four main trading sessions. Sydney, Tokyo, London, and the New York session. Both the Sydney and Tokyo sessions are regularly referred to as Asian sessions. Therefore, Forex can also sometimes be referred to as the 3-session market: Asian, London, and New York.

Below is a brief overview of trading sessions:

1. LONDON SESSION – open between 8 am GMT – 5 pm GMT; EUR, GBP, USD are the most active currencies;

2. US SESSION – open between 1 pm GMT – 10 pm GMT; USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY are the most active currencies;
