The KHR/US Dollar exchange rate is unusual because Cambodia's economy is heavily dollarized, with US dollars widely used alongside the riel. The National Bank of Cambodia manages the riel closely against the dollar, so its value versus other currencies largely follows the greenback. Garment and footwear exports, tourism, and foreign investment bring in the currency that supports it. Inflation and regional trade also shape this pair.

The US Dollar (USD) is strong because it is the world's primary reserve currency and the most widely used currency in global trade and finance. High global demand for USD-denominated assets, especially US Treasury bonds, continuously supports its value. Its strength is also reinforced by deep financial markets, global trust in US institutions, and safe-haven demand during economic crises.

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is considered very stable thanks to Switzerland's low inflation, strong banking system, and cautious monetary policy. The Singapore Dollar (SGD) is also stable, managed through a currency basket by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Both tend to hold their value well during global uncertainty and market volatility.

The riel dates to 1953, when Cambodia get rid of the French Indochinese piastre at independence. Its story is unusual: the Khmer Rouge abolished money entirely between 1975 and 1980, leaving the country with no currency at all. The riel returned in 1980, though US dollars still dominate much of daily commerce until this day.
